SLEEPYSIDE TRIBUNE SOME LOCALS HELPED SERVE, OTHERS STILL MISSING AFTER TWIN TOWER TRAGEDY

Being a bedroom community for New York City, there was a noticeable holding of breath from many families in our town. As television coverage continued, many Sleepyside residents were busy watching the faces on their television set while frantically dialing family known to be in the City. Office Daniel Mangan was noted to be in a scene near the Towers directing traffic. His uncle, William Regan, an employee of Matthew Wheeler, and his guardian, Edmund Maypenny, a local resident were not available for comment. Matthew and Madeleine Wheeler and local bank manager Peter Belden were known to be meeting with Belden's son, local physician, Brian Belden. Dr. Loyola Kevins gave no comment as to any knowledge the whereabouts of any of the group. She did report she was seeing a large number of medical responses due to the continuing event. The local volunteer fire department covered both White Plains and Sleepyside calls while much of the White Plains Fire Department went to cover NYFD stations that had initially responded to the fire.

As of publication time, no further names were known but it is expected sadly that the list will increase over the next few days. The local Red Cross affiliate is asking that anyone who has not heard from a family member who was in the City, please contact them. Anyone with family members who were in the Twin Towers is asked to let the Red Cross know as soon as contact is made so a list of the survivors can be circulated for all family. The local high school was turned into a blood collection site and the local Sleepyside Blood Center will be open from 7 am to 7 pm until need has subsided. Please listen to the local television station for advisories on possible school closings and where to go for help with the stress of the situation.
